Hi all, looking for any information you may have on an Old Town canvas canoe that I just inherited. Very neat to see so many of these being enjoyed across the country, knowing each was made only an hour away!

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 178742 is a 15 foot long Feather Weight model with a keel. It was built between July and August, 1967. The original exterior Dacron covering was dark green. It shipped on August 18th, 1967 to East Hebron, New Hampshire. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan was created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Canoes with a family connection are always extra special. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

I understand, mistakes happen. The Old Town canoe with serial number 176742 is an 16 foot long Otca model with a keel. It was built between September and December, 1966. The original exterior paint color was Dupont's dark green. It shipped on May 31st, 1967 to Raymond, Maine. A scan of this build record can be found below.

That tracks, there’s not a whole lot of the paint remaining but what is still there matches a swatch of DuPont green. Still diving into the deep end of what might be involved in performing a restoration myself, it’s rather intimidating.

how much were Feather Weights supposed to weigh?

The Fifty Pound model was renamed to the Lightweight in the 1966 Old Town catalog. The weight of the 15 foot version was listed at 58 pounds. A similar Featherweight model covered with Dacron was introduced then with 46 pounds as the weight. The 1967 catalog added a Trapper model with "polypropylene reinforced plastic in place of canvas" (a.k.a. fiberglass) at 55 pounds as shown at the below.

The books at the links below may assist. Most questions have come up here before so the search function can help. Good luck,

Benson
