I am looking for any information on production date etc. on the canoe L 749007 15. The canoe has recently been passed to me on the death of my father in law. The canoe is extremely well preserved with all associated hardware and accessories (oars, oar locks, paddles, seat back and tarp/cover). My father in law and I spent many days fishing and hiking and I have very fond memories of times with him on the water. I will be returning the canoe to Maine from Vermont and look forward to fishing from the canoe on ponds (not the rivers!) in the Katahdin region and further north.

Welcome, my guess is that you may have the Old Town with serial number 174907. This is a 15 foot long square end canoe model with narrow 2 3/4 inch planking, half ribs, a keel, an outside stem, and a rowing seat. It was built between May and August, 1965. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on August 28th, 1965 to West Hartford, Connecticut. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join, or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match. Page four of the 1965 catalog at https://www.woodencanoe.org/_files/ugd/537308_10ff35a5b8574215a289f521ec548b17.pdf has more details. Canoes with a family connection are always extra special. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you Benson, absolutely the correct canoe, John A. was my grandfather in law and he passed it to his equally passionate fisherman son John A. (Jack) jr.. excellent service.
