Old Town #14542

I bought this around 1973 or 1974 in Ohio. I think it may be a 1911 guide model. I restored it at that time and used it frequently for quite a few years. Some time later I lent it to a friend and he rolled it over some rocks on the Little Beaver Creek. It was still water tight but had some broken ribs and planking. It also broke my heart. Over the years I have used it occasionally but I never could get myself to start work on it again. Next spring I hope to finally do just that. I now reside in Portland, Oregon so the old girl has made it all the way across the country. I would appreciate any info you could provide. The canoe had some unusual custom features such as a 5 1/2 foot bow deck that looked to be original. This I kept. Other features included mahogany thwarts and seats as well as keelsons on the hull. Thanks for the help, 2re

14542 appears on a 17' Old Town Charles River model in AA grade with mahogany gunwales, mahogany seats, decks and thwarts, mahogany outside stems, half ribs and a keel. It was painted dark green and shipped to Boston. Ma in August of 1911. A copy of the build record is attached.

There is no mention of the special deck that you described, which almost certainly would have been noted.

Scans of approximately 210,000 records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
