Curious about Wooden Canoes
Help please with Old Town 125270 - 18 belongs to a neighbor who is considering sale, need re canvas, has warped gunnel and some dry rot but overall in restorable condition. Thanks

The Old Town canoe with serial number 125270 is an 18 foot long, GS (Guide's Special or utility) grade, Guide's model with white Maine cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch thwarts in place of seats, and a keel. It was built between June, 1938 and January, 1939. The original exterior paint color was G. S. (Guide's Special) green. It shipped on April 3rd, 1939 to Cresco, Iowa. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?57 may help your neighbor with the sale. Feel free to reply here if you or they have any other questions.

Benson
