Old Town #112419 17

INNKEEPER
My friend and neighbor finally dug his Old Town #112419 17 out of his barn. We'll begin a major rebuild soon at Maine Made Wooden Canoe Works - see us on Facebook! Can you please look up the build record for this old girl? Thanks.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 112419 is 17 feet long, CS (common sense or standard) grade, Otca model with western red cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, birch decks, thwarts and seats, and equipped with a keel and outside stems. It was built in the first half of 1933, being mostly finished on by July 25, 1933, but it looks like the keel (and maybe the outside stems) was fitted on September 5, 1933 and a final varnishing on September 6, 1933. The original exterior paint color was dark red. It was shipped on September 28, 1933 to Holyoke, Mass. from the Springfield Exposition. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail image attached below. A little googling shows that an Eastern States Exposition is held in Springfield Mass., apparently annually, and was held in 1933. Perhaps this canoe was on exhibit there, then shipped to its first owner.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. If that is the case, photographs of the deck, side profile, seats, and other details would be helpful in identifying the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
