Curious about Wooden Canoes
I would like the records on this sailing canoe serial #10687-18. Know it is an 18' OTCA.

Welcome, the Old Town with serial number 10687 shows a 16 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, HW (heavy water) model with red western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, long oak decks, oak thwarts, oak seats, spruce outside finish rails, a keel, outside stems, sponsons, and a painter ring. It was built between January and May, 1909. The original exterior paint color was bright red with "Red Wing" painted on the right and left bow. It shipped on June 2nd, 1909 to Southbury, Conn. with two slat backs and two spruce paddles. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.
This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Can you supply some pictures of the serial numbers from each end along with the interior of this canoe? What is the extreme overall length in a straight line? There is no mention of a sail rig so that was probably added after it left the factory. I checked the 10687x and 110687 records but didn't find any better matches. The Carleton record with this serial number shows a 17 foot long canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
