Curious about Wooden Canoes
I just traded for an Old Town with the serial number 106144 - 16. Any information would be appreciated.

Dave

Old Town 106144 may not be your canoe, as it comes up a 15 foot CS grade 50 pounder finished May-June of 1930. It has red Western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, a keel, and was painted dark green and shipped to Old Forge, NY, on June 9, 1930.

Check the serial number at both ends and compare, and we can try again if this is the wrong record.

The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. Thanks...

I'm new to this, but after checking the number on both ends the 106144 is correct. Additionally, 16 is also present. Am I incorrect in thinking that the 16 is a 16 footer and therefore not matching the record?

Should I be looking for another way to identify what I have? What other resources should I be using? The person who had the canoe prior to me thought it was 1952/53 OT Yankee, but was uncertain.

I need to become a member since I'm obviously going to need a bunch of help on this project.

Thanks again,

Dave

Given the 106XXX serial number, IF it's an Old Town, it's earlier than 1950s. post pictures of the SN, and many eyes will have a look at it.

Yes, pictures would help a lot. A 1952-53 Old Town would have a serial number in the 157XXXs--- I substituted your "0" for a "5" and it comes up a lapstrake from '51, which is even farther off...

I'm a knucklehead...

I went to photograph the serial number today, and I realized that I transposed a couple of numbers. The correct serial # is 160144. Can you give me the record on this number instead?

Thanks,

Dave

Old Town 160144 is a 16 foot CS (common sense, or middle) grade HW model canoe that was finished May-July of 1953. It has a keel and was originally dark green. It was shipped July 14, 1953, to Sewaringen Sporting Goods of Athens, Ohio. This seems to match what you were told a little closer.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
