I have found an old canoe paddle, 8' long and wonder if anyone knows what type of canoe or boat one would use this length of paddle? I found it at a tag sale and bought it only because I never seen a paddle that long.
Just a guess, but I suspect the paddle was made for or used by someone who paddled standing up a lot. I paddle a lot standing up, solo, and an eight-footer would work fine for that purpose.
I made some reproduction "Horicon Marsh Paddles" for a fellow in Wisconsin. They were about 8 feet, with a narrow blade and T-handle. They were intended to paddle and push off the bottom while standing on the deck of a duckboat in marshes.
I have a similar one made by the late Pepper Martin of Old Town Maine who gave me several paddles the 8 foot one was made for paddling a float plane
i used it to paddle standing up i still have it but lost the Basswood paddle he made for me light as a feather
