I spent yesterday stripping my 1924 OTCA with Citrstrip, which went surprisingly well considering I've never done this before. As I was scrubbing the wood clean, however, I noticed a few spots (like those in the attached photos) where the varnish was especially thick and remained attached to the wood. As I was about to reapply more stripper to remove it, I realized that I really liked the way it looks with patches of varnish here and there. So my question is: Do I need to get rid of all previous varnish before I apply new varnish? Or can I leave some on there for character (as long as I sand it so the new varnish can attach itself)?
