New Outwales for Kennebec

I have been asked to make and install new outwales for a 16'8" Kennebec. Can anyone please advise on the proper material, sizing, and cross section shape, as well as fastening details? I am not sure what model it is, but it has been fiberglassed. Thanks, Lew

Hi Lew,

I recently picked up my first Kennebec and it's an early one where they fastened the outwale from the inside of the inwale with nails. ( I posted some picture in a thread "Suspect Kennebec")

It would appear the fastened the outwales before they canvased the canoe and that's why they have that small molding under the outwale.

The gunnels on my canoe are wider than usual "D" shaped.

I think they did change their outwales or it may have been an option. I haven't looked at their old catalogs yet.
