Michigan Canoe Nut
I flipped over my Gerrish and just didn’t notice till now that the stems are stepped to allow the planking to sit on it. Very interesting. Anyone seen this before? I have not and I’ve seen my share of canoes!

A different view might help. It looks like the planking is carved out to allow the stem to peek through?
Not sure.
I don't recall anything like that on mine. I just went through a few hundred pictures and do not see anything like that. Typical Gerrish planking pattern in the first image.

the stem is shaped so the planking runs smoothly across the side of the stem. It makes a constantly changing angle on the side of the stem which gradually changes to one constant bevel. It allows the planking to come together at the top of the stem.
Its kind of hard to explain but hopefully the pictures will make it clearer.
The object is that you don't want the planking to just be resting in the corner of the stem but to shape a flat space for the planking to rest against and to be nailed to.
