I am preparing to sell a canoe that I have owned for 50 years and used little, after refinishing it 40 years ago. I have always assumed it is an Old Town, given to me by a neighbor when I was a kid. The S/N is I46737 17. I would appreciate knowing about its date of manufacture, etc. Thanks in advance.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 146737 is a 17 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, Otca model with open spruce gunwales, wooden slat seats (instead of cane), half ribs, a keel, and outside stems. It was built between October and December, 1946. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It was shipped on January 29th, 1947 to Milwaukee, Wis. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that they could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match the canoe. The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?t=57 may help you sell it. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
