Wooden Canoes are in the Blood
I went and looked at a 25' Old Town War canoe today. Serial #173647. When you have time can the build sheet be posted?
It's really not in bad shape. It does need some wood work on the stem points and it appears to have been used in salt water at some point because some of the tacks have halos around them. Could not see all the ribs. Canvas is falling off. But I think it could be had at a reasonable price.

Thanks in advance.

Jim

The Old Town canoe with serial number 173647 is a 25 foot long war canoe model with outside stems and a floor rack. It was built between January and April, 1964. The original exterior paint color was white. It shipped on April 16th, 1964 to Peekskill, New York. A scan showing this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the project if you decide to proceed,

Benson

That's it!! The outwales are screwed on with Philips head screws. Would that be normal for a 1964 build date?
Thanks very much.

It is possible that they experimented with Philips screws in 1964 but that doesn't seem likely. This canoe has clearly had some work over the years so my guess is that the Phillips screws were added later. The deck combings don't look original and modern tag on the stern deck wasn't available until after 1979.

Thanks Benson. I also thought the combings were replaced but wasn't sure about the timing on the use of Philips screws.

I think a half dozen round fence posts are in order, but I'm not going under there. With a good rope hooked up you would be in business if the stems clear to joists. You should preserve the extraction and share.
Have fun. The addiction is really coming along nicely.
