Hello,
I am responsible for the repair and maintenance of 6 25' old town war canoes at four winds camp on Orcas island in Washington state.

If the camp in past years has made inquiries here I apologize, I have no record of it.
These canoes are still used every summer in salt water by youths.
Here are some shots of some of the canoes from the 1930's and 40's.
Any information in the archives would be nice to have.

thank you,

Hi Jim,

One of our wonderful members will provide the information on your serial numbers shortly, I'm sure. For now though, thanks so much for sharing those wonderful photos! What great snapshots of canoe history in the Pacific Northwest. You should know that there is a WCHA chapter in your region:

Northwest Chapter
contact: Martin Ferwerda
503-622-6031
Email: nwwoodencanoe@yahoo.com
Chapter Website: www.nwwoodencanoe.org

The Northwest chapter has excellent gatherings in both Spring and Fall, and they produce a very nice newlestter:

I hope you and/or the camp will consider joining the WCHA and will encourage interested camp visitors to check out this great organization.

Michael

The Old Town canoe with serial number 101122 is a 25 foot long CS (common sense or middle) grade, war canoe model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, thirty inch decks, maple thwarts, maple seats, a keel, outside stems, and a floor rack. It was built between March and May, 1929. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on May 28th, 1929 to Seattle, Washington.

The record for the canoe with number 102089 shows an 18 foot long canoe. My guess is that you may really have the one with number 102086. This is a 25 foot long CS (common sense or middle) grade, war canoe model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, a keel, outside stems, and a floor rack. It was built between June and August, 1929. The original exterior paint color was red enamel. It shipped on August 10th, 1929 to Bridgewater, New Hampshire.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 104475 is a 25 foot long CS (common sense or middle) grade, war canoe model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, thirty inch decks, a keel, outside stems, and a floor rack. It was built between January and April, 1930. The original exterior paint color was orange. It shipped on May 2nd, 1930 to Seattle, Washington.

The record for the canoe with number 105739 shows an 16 foot long canoe. None of the other likely ones matched either. The information at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?791 may help and please post some pictures of the numbers from each end. It could also be helpful if you can identify which digit is the least clear.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 139512 is a 25 foot long CS (common sense or middle) grade, war canoe model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, thirty inch ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, a keel, outside stems, and a floor rack. It was built between March and June, 1944. The original exterior paint color was white. It shipped on June 28th, 1944 to Deer Harbor, Washington.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 139575 is a 25 foot long CS (common sense or middle) grade, war canoe model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, a keel, outside stems, and a floor rack. It was built between March and June, 1944. The original exterior paint color was light Yale blue. It shipped on June 28th, 1944 to Deer Harbor, Washington.

Scans of these build records can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below. These scans and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if these descriptions don't match your canoes. Better late than never? Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you for the information. The serial numbers I have were written down in a file. I did not find the numbers on the canoes. We do have a couple 18' and 16' old town canoes that have been retired to the rafters. They may be the ones with the serial numbers for shorter canoes.
My budget renews on Oct 1st. That will be when I can sign up for membership. I have 70 other boats to maintain and I have maximized the spending for the year.

Here is another photo of our canoes.SKMBT_28316090712470 (1)-1.jpg

You are most welcome and the other build record is attached below. The Old Town postcard below along with the videos at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suPzaGuBVVI from 2015 and at http://www.filmpreservation.org/preserved-films/screening-room/wohelo-camp-ca-1919 from 1919 show a similar group of war canoes at a summer camp in Maine. The thread at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?5421 includes many other pictures of war canoes including several under construction at the factory and being shipped by truck if you are interested. Your old pictures are much appreciated and feel free to post the serial numbers of any other boats that you want to document. It may take a while if a significant portion of your 70 are Old Towns.
