Hello, I have 2 canoes, 1that I bought 40 years ago and have paddled quite a lot of Maine waterways, it’s an Old Town 20’ serial number 130795.
The other I bought several years ago with the idea to rebuild it in retirement, its number is 98881, Old Town.
Can you help me with the history of these canoes ?
Thanks

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 130795 is a 20 foot long Guide model with white Maine cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, half ribs, and no keel. It was built between October, 1940 and March, 1941. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on April 19th, 1941 to Augusta, Maine.

The Old Town with serial number 98881 is a 16 foot long, CS (Common Sense) grade, Square Stern model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, a 48 inch spruce deck, spruce thwarts, spruce seats, a keel, outside stems, a floor rack, and sponsons. It was built between October, 1928 and June, 1929. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on June 18th, 1929 to Jamestown, New York.

Scans showing these build records can be found below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if these descriptions don't match. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions,

Benson
