I am looking for info on Old Town 174329 16. Know it is a ca. 1962 16' guide with mahogany gunwales, ash decks and thwarts and a keel. Previous owner said Old Town had looked it up in the early 90s for him and it was originally red. Looking for confirmation. Thanks, Jon

Welcome, the build record for the Old Town canoe with serial number 174329 tells a slightly different story. This shows a 16 foot long Otca model with half ribs, a keel, outside stems, narrow 2 3/4 inch planking, and a bang plate along the full length of the keel. It was built between November, 1964 and October, 1965. The original exterior paint color was red. It shipped on October 12th, 1965 to Dayton, Ohio. A scan showing this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. See https://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/14815/ for the record of a sibling canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson
