lapstrake boat ID

Wooden Canoe Maniac
Any help with identifying this boat would be a help. serial # on the transom knee 7602. A really nice boat cedar planking over oak frames , mahogany seats and transom. Copper clench nails. Looks like one of the old town lapstrake boats. But it's only 10 feet long and 4 1/2 feet wide. Only serial number is in the back. The owner thinks it came from Moosehead lake. I can tell it's been in salt water though. It's had some repairs and add ons. It may just be a nice old boat, also very heavy. Thanks, Dave

OH, MY, MY.......what a great boat for pullin coppa....wow....romance and old world charm to boot... Moosehead, yes ! and pullin coppa, for sure.

I can say a little bit about who didn't build it but can't offer much of a guess about who did. The Old Town and Carleton build records for serial number 7602 show 16 and 18 foot long canoes respectively. Kennebec doesn't appear to have issued this serial number since their records skip from number 7099 to 8000. All of these records are attached below. There is a long list of Maine canoe builders at http://wcha.org/legacypages/maine-list.htm and that list would be much longer if it included all of the builders who might have constructed a boat like this. I agree that it looks like a nice one. Good luck with the restoration,

Benson
