Kennebecs

The Kennebec canoes with serial numbers 11451 and 11452 are shown on page 496 of volume two in the Kennebec ledgers. These were assigned to two 17 foot long Torpedo models with open gunwales. The second one mas marked as a type 4A. They were planked by Hewes on July 19th and 18th respectively in 1916. Roy canvased them and applied the first filler coats on July 24th and 25th respectively in 1916. The second filler coat was applied on August 4th, 1916. The keels were oak with maple braces (thwarts) and seats. Huard railed the first one on April 24th, 1917 and Priest (?) railed the second one on May 30th, 1917. The first one was painted orange on May 4th, 1917 and it shipped to Chamberlain on May 23rd, 1917. This information is blank for the second one.

The scans of this build record can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below. These original Kennebec records are reproduced through the courtesy of the Maine State Museum.

The microfilms and scans of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) as you probably know well. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoes. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you, Benson!

The numbers seem to to right but these are 16 footer's. They have the chunky trim pieces and a few chamfered rib tips, no deck plates although one has nail holes an a rectangular shadow. They are in tough shape. I tried to make them Skowhegans but their ribs are not tapered and the trim pieces aren't as nicely done as the Skowhegans that we've seen. But the profile does look like Skowhegan....

I'll post photos and measurements soon.

I checked the numbers again and they are fairly legible as 11451 and 11452 both followed by 16. They are 16' long, 35" wide and 12 3/3" deep. The ribs are 1 7/8" x 3/8" with no taper. The tips of most ribs have a slight chamfer. The ribs are 1 7/8 to 2" apart.
The photos show that the bow and stern profile is different. This is explained in #2 as the stem has been replaced. The stems are short, under the decks by a full rib's width. The seats and thwarts are not in the same location in both canoes. The thwarts in #1 look original. It could be that the inwales in #2 have also been replaced as the screw holes for the thwarts and seats are not all centered.

The trim pieces are pretty chunky, not like the Skowhegans that we'vs seen, but these too could be replacements. There are no shadows of decals but #2 has 2 holes in the stern deck and a rectangular shadow.

So as the numbers don't match Kennebecs, I guess these are probably Skowhegans.

Both canoes need much work and will be great projects for their new owners. The owner has offered them for free and we'll post them in the classified "free" section with a description of their conditions.
