Hi

I have an old Kennebec Canoe. It looks like the serial number plate says 15187. Can anyone tell me how old this canoe is ? I have pics of my Grandfather with it from the 30's. Any information will be appreciated. Thank you.

The Kennebec Canoe with serial number 15187 is an 18.5 foot long Maine Guide's model. It was planked by Fred Roy on January 15th, 1921. Roy added the canvas covering on the same day. He also filled it on January 22nd, 1921. Thompson railed it on May 21st, 1921. The original color was green. It shipped to the Aloha Club in Pike, New Hampshire on June 7th, 1921 along with several other canoes from this page. The page at http://www.acacamp.org/anniversary/collection/centennials/aloha.html has more information about this summer camp. The scans of this build record can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below. These original Kennebec records are reproduced through the courtesy of the Maine State Museum.

The microfilms and scans of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA). I hope that you will join or contribute to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join. More information about the Kennebec models can be found in the Kennebec catalogs contained on the Historic Wood Canoe and Boat Company Catalog Collection CD available from http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/cdrom.htm on the web.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
