Just for fun...

Seller claims this is "an old 17'Kennebec", with an added "keel" for sailing. Never saw a keel quite like this!! https://www.facebook.com/marketplac...wse_serp:48c0e266-254d-46e1-b5e7-f8ae00c2227f

Say it ain't so... is this the same canoe I looked at (not in Groton) about 8 years ago? I was pretty sure it was a Kennebec. The seller had no idea what it was other than taking up space.
If it's the same canoe, it has a broken inside rail.
Benson, yes, it was set up for sailing and it was VERY heavy.

WOW. just, wow. fiberglass looks especially well done.
Incredibly so.
That canoe was a proper find. I'm now kicking myself for lacking the vision to see through a few minor cosmetic blemishes.
As I recall, it was a nice day for a drive so I settled for that. I took a few pictures because the canoe was extraordinary. It truly is.

It might be worth another nice day trip... if you look beyond the canoe in question in the sellers photos, you'll see a green canoe with sponsons and rudder hardware, a hanging red canoe with shapely stem and non-brass stem band, and finally, what appears to be a lapstrake canoe or pulling boat on horses. Seeing all the boats might justify the trip, assuming they are all still together in the same location. In MGC's pictures the canoe in question appears to be hogged but that could just be perspective I suppose. I have recently restored a canoe once clad with fiberglass and it was no fun to clean up, but at the end, worth the effort.

You are a glutton for punishment. If you PM me an email address I can send you a few more images to help you decide if this canoe is one worth saving.
I remember working on an Austin Healey about 30 years ago. It came out super nice. I had it painted a very special BRG color with a bit of dark blue in it. The body looked great. It ran well. The only problem was that the restoration was a nightmare. My final takeaway was that if I ever did another one (I did two) that I would start with a better (Western, rust free) car. I got that vibe when I looked this canoe over.

Thanks for the thought about additional pictures, but this isn't a candidate for me!

As a solo paddler, and tripper, my interest is in smaller canoes. I cursed the fiberglass cleanup on my Bobs Special, but am looking forward to painting the filled canvas in the Spring and getting her in the water. At 62 pounds for my heaviest canoe, and hopefully at sub-60# for the Bobs, I wouldn't even contemplate one of these 17' (or more) beasts!

On the subject of cars, and restoration... I'm currently lusting over a 1959 Porsche 356d sitting in the garage of a client. It looks pretty good; all numbers matching original parts, spare engine, etc. but who knows what's lurking under the paint... The owner is 80 and will be selling the car soon so I'm ingratiating myself in hopes of being in line to make an offer! Probably a fool's errand.

I fully agree with the comments about the quality of previous restoration work on this canoe (especially the seamless fibreglassing round the stem), however if it were anywhere in the UK at that price, I'd drive to get it this evening, and think I'd got myself an absolute bargain well worthy of my time and attention.

I'd be after that Porsche condition not a consideration and hoping that it's a Super. I missed out on a cabriolet back in 1976 and I'm still upset about it.. although my 986 is quite good enough.
Our market for wooden canoes allows us to be picky. I couldn't count how many Rushtons and Morris canoes I have passed on or let others know about in the past 50 years. None of them have gone to waste. I've owned much better Kennebecs.

Porsche cars are not that rare over here but I wouldn't have one even if I could afford one.(definitely not a Cayenne - ugly blobby thing!)

Sorry for the thread drift, but I can't figure out how to add photos to a private message for MGC's benefit. Here are some car pics to look at.... again, just for fun!

To cap off the drift, Coincidentally I just gave away a complete original 356 shop manual to my son's mechanic. He's been taking good care of me and is also into these. The manual included the 1600 and 1600 S motors. It was complete with all of the updates and revisions through the early 1960's.
That car is fabulous.
