I've got an Old Town with HIN XTC53997M84D. If I understand correctly, that means it was built in November of 1984. From what I've seen on other posts, that may be just after records stop, but I thought it worth asking if there exists any other information on this boat?

Welcome and congratulations, a few build records after 1984 have been scanned and yours is among them. The HIN XTC53997M84D is a 17 foot long roto molded Discovery that was assembled with inserts in the rails. The original exterior color was red. It shipped on May 3rd, 1984 to Rockville, Maryland. A scan showing this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. The 1984 catalog at https://www.woodencanoe.org/_files/ugd/537308_05ba55f8df4e479dab297c93090a556b.pdf has more details in the price list on page 17. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you! Do we know when Old Town first made rotomolded polyethylene boats? I've seen a few different dates listed as the start of the Discovery line. Was anything else rotomolded prior to the polyethylene Discovery's? And any idea why the 1984 catalog you linked wouldn't have included the Discovery in the main body of the catalog? Seems like just about everything else that's on the price list has a spot in the main body of the catalog. Just curious about all this since I hadn't realized rotomolding had been around so long.

The Old Town rotomolded Discovery model was first shown on page six at https://www.woodencanoe.org/_files/ugd/537308_2cd56b7af3d741d4ae94a29a8f2b211c.pdf of the 1985 catalog. Catalogs are only printed once a year and there is a very long lead time to get a new model photographed and included in the catalog. The November dates on this build record were probably well past when they could arrange for a photo shoot and get it into the 1984 catalog. The first fiberglass model wasn't ready until very late in 1964 so everyone shown paddling it in the 1965 catalog was wearing a heavy sweater.
