I just got my father's old canoe. It has been in storage (in my brother's brother-in-law's garage) for the last 9 years. Now that it has come to live with us, we can't wait to use it.

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town with serial number 199488 is a 15 foot long Trapper model with a keel. It was built in February, 1974. The original fiberglass exterior was clear to show the natural wood. It shipped on March 1st, 1974 to Kalamazoo, Michigan. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Canoes with a family connection are always extra special. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Happy paddling,

Benson

This is our canoe! Family lore is that the canoe was in the window of a sporting goods store, maybe as display? Every time my father passed by, he would go in and ask them if he could buy their canoe. At some point, they relented and the canoe has lived happily even after with us.
