Info Request- Old Town 24409

I have been canoe buying "sober" for almost 5 years....and unless my "sponsor" (wife) intervenes I am considering falling off the wagon.

Benson- I hope you are doing well and if you have the time, I would appreciate any build info you can provide me on this supposed 16' 1948 Old Town Canoe SN 24409

Welcome back, and the information you provided doesn't seem to match. The Old Town canoe with serial number 24409 is a 17 foot long HW model that shipped in 1915 and the one with number 124409 is an 18 foot long square end paddling model that shipped in 1938. All of the canoes in the 24409x range are fiberglass and from 1982. The charts at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/oldtown_chart.html indicate that a canoe which shipped in 1948 probably has a serial number around 150,000. Their serial number 154409 went on a 15 foot long lapstrake boat that shipped in 1950. Can you confirm the serial numbers from each end and the extreme overall length in a straight line? Some pictures of the numbers from both ends with the surrounding areas, the bow deck, and interior could also help. Thanks,

The Gentleman had provided me this photo of the old title he found for the canoe. I have messaged him to try and look at the Stem for the numbers. More to follow. My amatueur eye tells me it looks like a Guide Series as its ends are pretty flat and do not resemble an HW model or others.

I could be wrong...To me it looks Canadian built.
Better photos will help confirm.
Also know that there are many folks that use the name Old Town generically for any wood canvas canoe, so if it isn’t an Old Town there is reason for it to be registered as such.

The gentleman was able to provide me a photo of the numbers on the stem. I am not versed enough to know if other Canoe Manufacturers also utilized that approach to number their boat.

From what I can see it looks like 2 sets of numbers, the first being 1 4 9 2 and the second being perhaps 7 9 4 8

The picture is hard to read and I am not certain the 7 is an actual number. I have loaded the photo for further review and ivestigation

My guess is that you have a Peterborough Champlain model #1492 with serial number 7948. These were listed in their catalogs with this model number from 1943 to 1958. See http://www.wcha.org/store/canadian-wood-canoe-and-boat-company-catalog-collection for more details. The thread at https://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/16443/ shows a similar example. There are no known serial number records for Peterborough so there isn't much more that anyone here can tell you. Sorry,
