I have a 17 ft Old Town canoe (remnants of sticker and diamond headed bolts) from circa 1947 and would like to know details such as the model type. Serial number is 148144. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome, the Old Town canoe with serial number 148144 is a 17 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, HW (heavy water) model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, a keel, and sponsons. It was built between March and June, 1947. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on June 23rd, 1947 to Tulsa, Oklahoma. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions,

Benson

Thanks much for the info and prompt reply! Everything matches and the canoe is still in Oklahoma. The sponsons are long gone - the canoe was covered with fiberglass and polyester resin when I got it. That didn't adhere well to the cedar, so was tedious but relatively easy to remove. Restoration, without sponsons, is almost complete. Just need to add the outer gunwales and keel.
