Good day,
I would like to apologize in advance if this is an improper request, but I am hoping to determine the vintage on a fiberglass Old Town sailing canoe. Serial number is 177129.
No problem, there are a few heretics among us. The Old Town canoe with serial number 177129 is a 16 foot long FG (fiberglass) model. It was built in November, 1966 which was the second year after this model was introduced. The original exterior gelcoat color was white on the top/decks and jade green on the bottom/hull. It shipped on May 17th, 1967 to Royal Oak, Michigan. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the thumbnail image attached below.
This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.
It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. The hull of this canoe has a balsa wood core so there is some wood involved. The sail rig is not mentioned on the build record so that was probably added after it left the factory. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
Thanks so much for the information and the quick reply! We're holding a raffle to benefit our local Conservation District with the canoe and sailing rig as the grand prize, and knowing the history of the canoe makes it all the more interesting. Not sure what part of Maine you are in, but I spent a fantastic summer as crew aboard the schooner Victory Chimes out of Rockland in 1997. Pretty part of the world...
