It just might be a Shell Lake

Thanks to who responded... With your help it looks like a Shell Lake boat, NOW to find the ID number.

Thanks,

Waupaca, Wisconsin

Not a Shell Lake. Sure looks like an Old Town Otca to me. Serial number will be found stamped on the inboard upper face of the stem. Numbers can often be hard to find, not revealing themselves until after the varnish is stripped. It is also possible they've been obliterated over time.

Did all Old Town boats have hull numbers?

After using a heat gun and scraping, I am still unable to locate a hull number. Did all canoes from Old Town have hull numbers?

Upon closer inspection and with your help this boat does look like a pic from Dragonfly (Old Town Otca model 20" long deck with coaming. Ca. 1920).

Thanks again,
Waupaca, Wisconsin

Look on Both Stems.

Look on both stems.

It looks like it is an Old Town and unless it has seen total rehab, you should see a number there.

The stems are the one inch wide pieces of wood in the bow and the stern that form the profile of the canoe. The stems run perpendicular to the ribs and are usually ash or similar hardwood.

The numbers are stamped into the wood. I think I see some numbers on the stem in your photos, but I could be mistaken.

Good luck with your project.

Fitz.

Missing hull ID (more pics)

The stern stem is in bad shape if there was a number there it is gone... The bow inside stem is very good, but even after removing the old varnish with a heat gun I am unable to locate any markings or number.

It is very possible that the canoe came from a resort by the name of NELSEN COTTAGES here on the Waupaca Wisconsin Chain-O-Lakes.

Thanks to everyone for your help!
