Hello,

New to this canoe thing! Can someone please help me in identifying the date of a wooden Old Town Canoe, using the serial number I obtained from the canoe? Serial number #171979 16. I have looked over several sites and I am still confused on the date.

Thank you for your help!

The Old Town canoe with serial number 171979 is a 16 foot long Guide model with no keel. It was built between April and May, 1962. The original exterior paint color was G. S. (Guide's Special) Green. It was shipped on May 11th, 1962 to Denville, New Jersey. The back side of this record indicates that the canoe may have moved to Mt. Fern, New Jersey by March of 1971 when a previous letter requested a copy of this information.

Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found by following the links at the thumbnail images attached below. These scans and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
