Hi Steve,

Your Otca is a 16 footer with a keel, built during September and October of 1966 and shipped to Nate's Boat Shop in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on May 12, 1967. The original color was Old Town yellow.

A copy of the scan of this record is attached below. Scans of approximately 210,000 records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details.

Kathy,

Good morning.

I beleive that the original owner - now 80 - gave me the canoe. I it has been completely rebuilt - and is now Red -

The original owner was very pleased to see life breathed back into this beauty!

Cheers,

Steve

It's a thrill to see an original owner's eyes light up when they see their old canoe looking beautiful again-- and they know it'll be enjoyed by another family. And it's nice for you to have the canoe's history. Good work, Steve.

Carlton canoe # 10911 16 foot

Hi, I am new to WCHA and would like to find a record of the canoe that I am rebuilding. It is a Carlton as the brass name plate is still on the deck. It would be interesting to have a record of it. So far I am pretty sure it is called a Carlton Model, and was built between 1912 and 1914, as a chart of the Carlton Canoe Company fits it in as such as it has a 34 inch beam, 12 and one half inch depth and 16 ft long, actually 16' 5 "inches . I also have questions regarding some of the rebuilding, especially finishing, could some one steer me in the right direction and how to use the form for this. Thanks Jim

Welcome, Jim

Carleton 10911 is a 16 foot CS ("common sense") grade Carleton model canoe, finished between December of 1914 and March 1915. It has open spruce gunwales and ash decks, thwarts, and seat frames and was fitted with a keel and painted dark red. It was shipped, along with three cane backs, to Rochester, New York, on March 24, 1915.

The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. You'll find lots of help with your restoration project here... probably the "wood canvas fiberglass" category fits best... we love pictures and progress reports.

Welcome to the wonderful world of wooden canoes!

Kathy

Sorry I can't post build records successfully. The "new" computer Dell sent me is actually older than my old computer and needs more coffee, and programs I could run on my old computer-- until it got chronic blue screen disease-- don't work on this one. I'll keep working on it though.

carlton canoe # 10911 16 foot

Kathy Thanks so much for the prompt reply, The description fits, how ironic that the canoe was delivered to Rochester,NY. I was hoping that someone might find a description sheet of the building of the canoe.
I live in a suburb of Rochester. I found the canoe set out for the garbage, filled with black plastic bags of trash more than 20 years ago. A roofing project on my garage prompted me to clean out and ultimately decide to rebuild the canoe. My plans were to paint the canoe a dark maroon, how neat, that the original color was such. It has become an obsession of repairs. I am nearing the end of the re planking and thinking about the canvas and fillers and am undecided how I will approach the filling, varnish and painting? Any comments, interested in pictures? THANKS AGAIN. JIM

Quite a Find!

We're always very interested in pictures, Jim! Sounds like you found a great old canoe... glad you rescued her!

There's much experience within this group... and all are willing to share their thoughts. The best category to post your project in is "Wood Canvas\ Fiberglass". You may also use the "search" function at the top of the page to find old discussions.

If you haven't seen "The Wood and Canvas Canoe" by Stelmok and Thurlow, it's probably the best general reference around. Available in the WCHA Store and on eBay and in libraries.

I've also noticed that there are some YouTube videos on various aspects of canoe building. I can put in a search for "wood canvas canoe" and spend a lot of time there...
