We are starting to clean up and someday restore our old town canoe. the serial number is 117392. From what we can tell it is before 1930. there is some dry rot on one part of the canvas and someone put a thick varnish that is flaking off on the inside. otherwise in fantastic shape. also has a little spot for a sail... thanks for having this forum open and we appreciate any information. pictures to follow

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town with serial number 117329 is an 18 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Guide model with white Maine cedar planking, open spruce gunwales (oval on the outside), ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, a keel, and a bob stay. It was built between March and June, 1936. The original exterior color was dark green. It shipped on June 22nd, 1936 to Chicago, Illinois. The back side of the record indicates that it was returned for credit on August 26th, 1936. It was revarnished in September, 1936 and sold on October 28th, 1936 to a buyer in Presque Isle, Maine. Scans showing both sides this build record can be found below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. The sail rig was probably added later since it isn't mentioned on this build record. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
