I am restoring an old town with serial # 149418-18 how can i find out more about the original purchase date, etc. The canoe belonged to my grandfather in northern maine.

How great to have your grandfather's canoe to restore!
Old Town 149418 is an 18 foot CS ("common sense", or not fancy) grade HW model canoe built between July of 1947 and May of 1948. It has red Western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, half-ribs, a keel, outside stems and sponsons (whew!). The wood species used on decks, thwarts, and seat frames isn't specified, but birch and ash were commonly used on CS grade canoes, as well as maple and oak. The canoe was originally painted dark green and shipped July 2, 1948 to R.F. Gibson of Mattawakegg, Maine (at least, that's the way I read it!).
If this doesn't seem to fit the canoe you have, we can try again.
I'll attach a copy of the scan below. Scans of approximately 210,000 records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others.
