Hi. My friend has a fiberglass old town serial number 187048. I know this is a wooden canoe site, but I can't seem to find any info on this one.
I saw the chart that says it's around 1972. This canoe also has a sticker on it with a gold medal that is award that has something to due with plastics( can only read a couple words on it). Just trying to find any info on the thing. pretty cool old canoe. thanks!

The Old Town canoe with serial number 187048 is an 18 foot long FG (fiberglass) model. It was built between June and July, 1971. The original exterior gelcoat colors were desert white on the deck with yellow on the hull. It shipped on July 19th, 1971 to Stony Brook, New York. The back side of the record indicates that it had a problem which required a patch on the right side of the bow rail. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.

These scans and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. The award is from the Society of Plastics Industry for their Grand Design Award in 1966. It bested missile nose cones, car bodies (including the Studebaker Avanti), and many other early uses of fiberglass. The organization still exists as shown at http://www.plasticsindustry.org/ and the award has gone to a variety of products as shown in the list at http://www.thefreelibrary.com/UPCOM...+WHY+U.S.+REMAINS+ON+TOP+IN+ONE...-a011751708 from 1959 to 1991. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
