Don’t laugh…

Michigan Canoe Nut
Please don’t laugh at my “brilliance”. This actually worked out pretty well. As many of you know, a hull shape is never linear, it’s 3d curves. These birch paint stir sticks twisted and curved beautifully in order to push in the new rib against a faired structure. Rib formed at the opposite end for accuracy. I’ll post more later…. Just wanted to share an idea….

Whatever works. For structural integrity, the plank ends should be staggered on various ribs. I expect you were trying to minimize the amount of new wood.

Mike, not 100%. All features are identical to my early one, and Zach’s 17’. I cannot prove it without the bow plate.

Mile, my early Gerrish planking is all over the place, nothing like yours…….thwarts are spot on too.

Interesting. You and Zack have dealt with far more older and earlier hulls than I have so I'm in no way qualified to suggest otherwise. Who knows what happens between the first few hulls and the following hundreds? You would expect some degree of refinement.
It's just very hard to imagine that those early hulls could have been so crudely done in light of how nicely built these later ones are.
When I look at my boat, I see all kinds of small details that you would only expect a perfectionist intent on continuous refinements to do. Not so much on the one you are working on. Whatever the case, I know that when you finish that, it will be a prize.

It seems that on early canvas boats, they looked at planking like sheathing on a bark canoe. A means to the end….just something underneath the canvas so who gives a crap?! Strictly a place saver….

Interesting thread. I naively assumed that if the planking was miss matched then it was a reason to believe it was homemade. Most of the planking photos I’ve seen reflecting company made look very thought out. It seems that’s not true.

Chris, is it possible that you have a side photo? I’m curious how the bow to stern looks.
