Doc Severson

Can anyone tell me why this name rings a bell? He had a bunch of canoes, but.... He was in the Chicago area, and has a Park named after him. (Severson Dells)

Different guys. Doc Serverinsen was indeed Johnny's sidekick. Harry (Doc) Severson was, with his wife, a nature lover who left almost 400 acres to the Severson Dells conservancy, according to their website. I bet a bit of time spent with Google and Ancestry will reveal quite a bit about Doc Severson...

I went 10 pages deep in Google, and not a squeak. Used a variety of terms. The Dells comes up, but nothing on him. At any rate, I am getting a canoe that once belonged to him.

Severson Dells is a cool piece of ground! Spent quite a bit of time there when I lived in Rockford Illinois. The park is about 10 miles south west of Rockford. Never heard of a canoe connection, though.

The fellow I got the canoe from said that he had purchased it from Doc Severson about 35 years ago. He said that there was a loft in a barn that had a dozen or so old canoes, and that he bought the one he could paddle by himself. It never got restored. It is a Penn Yan Hunter/Fisherman, Ser# CM99. It will be a nifty little canoe when it is done. I think it will track a little better than the Whisper I built for my Dad, and it was a whole lot cheaper than the materials would have been.

I've done a couple Hunters. they look a little stubby on the sawhorses but in the water they are wonderfully stable and handle well.
