Enthusiastic about Wooden Canoes
I came across a print of this painting many years ago when we were staying at David Houghton's place outside London. I was so enthralled to see a painting of a cedar rib canoe I took a picture of it, but never asked David what he knew of the painting or the artist. A decade later with google image search invented I found out it's called Marooning and was painted by Edward John Gregory in 1887 and is at the Tate Museum.

But what really amazed me about that is that the Ontario Canoe Co only started up in 1883, and already by 1886 or '87 they had sent some cedar rib canoes to the UK.

Whether you like his art or not he sure had good taste in canoes, so I dug a bit more and found another painting of his called Boulter's Lock that seems to have the same canoe in it, and it was painted in 1885!

I'm probably the only one who finds this interesting but I'll leave it here in case Nick Dennis wanders by...
