Curious about Wooden Canoes
I am planning to restore a canoe that has been in my family for 50 years. It had been stored under cover and is in decent shape, but has been glassed. I am looking to learn anything I can about the canoes history. Thanks.

Hi Steve,

Your canoe is a 17' AA (Top grade) Carleton Indian Princes model with western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, seats and thwarts. It was equipped with half ribs, a keel, and outside stems. It was built in 1916 - 1917 sold to a company in Allentown, PA and painted "M. Green".

I don't know what M. Green is - maybe moss green, which could be most any shade.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe.

Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks for the quick reply. The canoe made its way back to Maine and is currently in Casco, practically your backyard. I am sure I will be posting lots of questions during my restoration journey. I look forward to becoming an active member in this community as soon as I finish a different boat project.
Steve
