We recently ran across a 16' Carleton canoe in good original condition. The serial number is 20260-16. The folks that have it would like to know the age & any other details.
Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike,

Your canoe is a 16' CS or middle grade Carleton with western red cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, birch decks, thwarts & seats. It was equipped with a keel, painted dark green and shipped in 1932 to the J L Hudson Co of Detroit, MI.

The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Providing photographs would help with identification, as would an accurate measurement of the boat's
length.

Thanks Dan,

I appreciate you taking the time to find & forward the info. I agree with your suggestion to be a member of WCHA. I've been a member for more than a decade (I think) years before I acquired a canoe (1920 CS OTCA). The members are a very knowledgeable & helpful group that you'd ever want to meet.

I believe you correctly ID'd the Carleton. I have a general question, what would distinguish a 'mid-grade' Carleton (OT) from other grades?

Like your website!

Thanks Again,
Mike

Well, that's a good question.

With Old Towns there are 3 grades: AA, CS, and GS (Guide Special) so we are used to saying middle grade for CS. But the Carleton Catalog from 1932 shows only the Carleton Canoe and the Carleton Princess Canoe. Also shown are sponson canoes and guide canoes. The Princess is like the Old Town AA with mahogany decks, seats, thwarts and rails. The sponson canoe could also be purchased as the Princess with all the mahogany.
