Caning

Curious about Wooden Canoes
Due to my cold work area I thought I would cane the seats in my warm house. I noticed after researching many how to books and videos that my seats do not have the 4 corner holes for the cane border. Seats on my 1019 old town ideal are the original mahogany. I’ve never seen the original way they would have been caned. Should I simply drill a hole in each corner? Or not add the border? I appreciate all the time people have taken to help on here.

Most Old Town canoe seats were caned without corner holes. Most caned chairs had corner holes so the majority of the instructions are for patterns with corner holes. This is your canoe so the choice of how to proceed is up to you. The picture below shows an original Old Town canoe seat cane pattern from 1917.

Looks like 1/4 inch holes in that seat frame? Mine are 7/32 holes but either way I should be able to cane that way. Already started the other seat. Thankyou benson.
