The canoe is 14` long 33" wide and12" deep. The ribs are 2" wide. The deck is 13 1/2" wide. The seats were caned. The serial number 1240. The original paint appears to be med dark blue. The canoe was found in a boat in the rafters of a boat house on the west side of the Cape Cod canal. It had been there for 50 + years. All the screws are matching. It is a rowing canoe.

Well, it doesn't seem likely to be an Old Town since their catalogs from this period didn't list any 14 foot long canoes or boats as I mentioned before. Does it have the length stamped in the stems in addition to the serial number? Most of the other characteristics don't match the other identified Old Town canoes from before 1906. It may remain an interesting but unidentified floating object.

Hi Benson, Only one stem has a serial I checked both stems again. There is nothing else showing except 1240. Maybe I am measuring it wrong. I am measuring from the point forward of the deck to the same place at the other end. The bow curves forward more. If I count the forward bow curve it adds another 6 inches. I might me measuring the whole thing wrong. Are there special points that the measurements are taken?

The length of a canoe is usually the overall extreme length in a straight line so your canoe would probably be 15 feet long when measured in this way. The identified early Old Town canoes all have the serial numbers in both ends plus two digits for the length of the canoe as shown below. I'm afraid that the manufacturer of your canoe is likely to remain a mystery.
