Build record Old Town canoe

Dave Nelson

Curious about Wooden Canoes
Looking for the build sheet for a 16' Old Town, serial number 104549-16, that I recently acquired. 1930 Yankee I'm told. Thanks in advance. Dave Nelson

Congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 104549 is a 16 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Yankee model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, a keel, and a floor rack. It was built between January and April, 1930. The original exterior paint color was palm green. It shipped on April 25th, 1930 to Detroit, Michigan. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Happy holidays,

Benson

Thank you, Benson. That's my boat, still with palm green paint but it seems to have been repainted at some time, maybe recanvassed too. Paint job is too crude for Old Town original. As I read the build record scan, it shipped in 1930, not 1940, with the varnish still "green" probably.
