Build Record for 44282

Hi Gene--

Old Town 44282 is a 17 foot AA grade HW model canoe finished from July 1916 to July 1919-- wow, two years to complete this baby! I wonder if WWI slowed things down...

Anyway, the canoe has red Western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, and mahogany decks, thwarts, and seat frames. It was fitted with a keel and sponsons (still there?). Original color was dark green, with what appears to be the word "Packed" after the color-- not sure what that means.

Included with the canoe were a pair of polished brass oarlocks and two pairs of oars and four paddles. After the oars is the notation LV & ct (or ctr) and I am unsure what that means.

The canoe was shipped to Green Lake, Maine, on July 23, 1919.

I cannot get the scan of this record to upload... don't know if it's my computer or something to do with the website or gremlins... but will try to upload later if nobody else beats me to it. At least you have the information.

My guess is that the oars had leather coverings with oar lock stops and copper tips. This was built during the first World War so it is not surprising that sales were down and some canoes might have lingered for a few years, especially a fancy AA model. A scan of the build record is attached at the link below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join. Thanks,

Benson

Thanks

Thank you Kathy and Benson. The canoe is now in the hands of a new Great Rivers Chapter member who is planning to join the WCHA.
