The Old Town canoe with serial number 158980 is an AA (or top) grade, 15 foot long fifty pound model with a keel and a floor rack. It was built between December, 1952 and April, 1953. The original exterior paint colors were similar to the ones shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design10.gif which was known as the design number 10. It shipped on May 1st, 1953 to Lake Placid, New York. The canoe was returned for extensive repairs on November 13th, 1956 as shown on the back side of the card. It returned to Wyalusing, Pennsylvania in January, 1957. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found below.
These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Wow! Six new ribs, 8 feet of planking, new canvas, filler, new outwales, keel and new paint with design #10 all done in twelve hours!! I must be doing something wrong or must be incredibly slow or think too much or maybe drink too much or maybe not enough. Oh well, back to work.

Mr. Clearwater... I did the same thing. Looked at the repair work order and came to the same conclusion. I just spent 3 hours today putting on just 3 strakes of planking on a new build! But then, I ain't no pro like the Old Town workers.

Looks like a total of 34.5 hours to me - $16.50 for 6 hours labor = $2.75/hr labor cost. Looks like left column is materials and right column is labor, so total labor was $95, which is a total of 34.5 hrs at $2.75/hr. So they got all this done in 34 and a half hours; with all their practice, they were efficient. The total cost for design #10 is interesting but seems unclear - $20 or a total of $30? I only have a 1952 catalog in front of me right now; it shows that design #10 was $20. Anyway, if it cost a total of $30 in this repair, that would be 11 hours of work (at $20, it would be 7.25 hours work).

I wanted to add to the canoe’s history that it was restored (I believe including re-canvassing) around 2012 by John McGreevy in Port Byron, NY.
