An ethhnographic boat model of a Beothuk or "Red Paint People" birch bark canoe (circa 1826), from Newfoundland, Canada. I've got a book on these from the National Museum in Ottawa.
It always struck me as the original folding boat as one could remove the thwarts and almost end up with a flat bark pannel.
