Asymmetrical grip

Wooden Canoes are in the Blood
Recently I carved a sassafras paddle with an asymmetrical grip. The paddle was a commission (retirement gift) but the idea came from a Redtail signature paddle I recently bought new from Kijiji (it was a comp to the photographer after an advertising shoot). See pics

And here's a recent blog post by Murat about an intriguing scroll grip paddle.

I started with a 6/4" sassafras board. That way I didn't have to laminate a piece on to increase the thickness to get the asymmetrical grip. I usually start with 6/4 anyway to ensure an oval shaft perpendicular to the blade.
