Anybody help with this Old Town S/N

I have an 18 foot canoe I believe to be an Old Town based on the deck and other hints. The serial number is hard to read but I believe it is 18 3862.

The canoe is a closed gunwale and I am getting ready to tackle a restoration.

Any info is appreciated.

It will probably take more than a serial number to identify this canoe. The Old Town build record for this number shows a 16 foot long canoe and their numbers 13862 and 113862 both show 17 foot long ones. Their number 183863 shows a 13 foot long fiberglass kayak. The only 18 foot long canoe in the 3862x range is 38625 which was a CS grade, Charles River model with closed gunwales and birch trim that shipped to Riverhill, New Hampshire on April 22nd, 1916. There is no Carleton record for this number and Kennebec put it on both a 16 foot long canoe and a 12 foot long rowboat. Can you confirm the extreme overall length and provide some pictures of: the inside stems from each end showing all of the serial numbers and the areas around them, the decks on each end, the interior including the seats and thwarts, the profile of the stems, and some overall images? Thanks,

Benson

Additional Info

Thanks for the quick response.

I will verify all that you asked for tomorrow when I go to the farm but I am pretty sure it is 18' overall and with the very thin rib ends would indicate the closed gunwale design.

I picked this boat up from a fellow that was using it as a paint tray to paint his barn. I have managed to scrap out the red barn paint but in doing so may have lost some of the numbers. We will take another look.

Thanks again,

Info Requested - You were correct

Benson,

I went to the farm today and checked again under a strong light and the serial number is indeed 38625 and the length is 18'.

Is there any way to tell what the construction materials might be? The planking almost looks like a red wood of some sort.

Hope I got this attachment thing right.

Bob

The Old Town canoe with serial number 38625 is an 18 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Charles River model with red western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, and a keel. It was built between May, 1915 and April, 1916. The original exterior paint color was lavender. It shipped on April 22nd, 1916 to Riverhill, New Hampshire. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. The information at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/specific.gif has the specifications for most of the other construction materials. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the restoration,

Benson
