Curious about Wooden Canoes
I just got a 16 foot canvas covered canoe
On the bottom I see what looks like 16 12458

Thanks for any help|

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 12458 is a 16 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Charles River model with red western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, spruce outside finish rails, and a keel. It was built between November, 1909 and May, 1910. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on June 15th, 1910 to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. The Carleton canoe with this serial number is 18 feet long and the Kennebec is 20.5 feet long. Both of these are from 1917. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you for the info
The people I bought it from thought it was a chestnut pal, but I discovered the old town looking serial number
Now to compare some pictures to continue the research

Thanks again!
Daryl

Most Chestnut and Old Town deck shapes are distinctly different. See the page at https://woodencanoemuseum.org/index.php/decks for some examples. The link below shows a similar Charles River model from 1906 (with sponsons). Feel free to attach some pictures here showing your canoe, the decks, and the serial numbers from both ends here if you still aren't sure.

Thanks Benson

The deck matches the Old Town style, I found the original mounting holes for the thwarts (3) and compared these to a photo and they line up to match also. The part that is different form the picture I found is the cap that is covering the gunwales . Is that what is referred to as the “covered gunwales” in the build sheet?

The rail caps on your closed gunwales have been replaced, which is not unusual. These would have been held on originally with nails and shaped slightly differently. The ones on the 1906 canoe in the link above appear to be original.
