209052

The Old Town canoe with serial number 209052 is a 17 foot long Molitor model with a keel and outside stems. It was built between August, 1975 and May, 1976. The original exterior paint color was the Indian Design which was also know as the design number four. This would have looked similar to the one shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/covers/large-65.gif on the cover of the 1965 catalog. It shipped on May 17th, 1976 to Woodland Hills, California. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks Benson. It has a design similar to #4 but the triangles are blue on one side and red on the other. My big question is canvas or glass? There's no indication on the build sheet so I'm guessing canvas but would hate to be wrong.

My guess is that this canoe left the factory with number ten canvas. The catalog from 1975 stated that the Molitor was "Wood-canvas. Available with reinforced plastic - $30.00 extra." All of the serial numbers from 209049 to 209058 are wood canoes. The build records for the fiberglass covered ones all appear to have "fg" written on the stage two line and the "Filled" section has been crossed out as shown below.

Another indication is that any variation of the standard design number four with the triangles "blue on one side and red on the other" is likely to have been noted on the original build record.
