Wooden Canoe Maniac
I looked at two today. Serial numbers are hard to read on both. The first canoe looks like CS grade 18293 16 or it could be 18289 16 The last two of the five digits are hard to see.

the second canoe is AA mahogany trimmed and seats with probably 20 inch long mahogany decks. 19696 17 or 19686 17. best I could come up with. I should have taken photos. Thanks for any help. Both canoes in NY state.

I think that you will need some pictures or more information. Both 18293 and 18289 are 18 feet long. There are probably over 50 CS grade canoes in the 182xx range. The one with 19696 is 18 feet and 19686 is 16 feet so those aren't good matches either. There are no 17 foot long AA grade canoes in the 196x6 range. Sorry,

Benson

OK can we try this again. Their in my shop now. 182934 16 and 119696 17 The 17 footer is Mahogany with D shaped outwales and 20 inch decks. A little better lighting here than that dark boathouse.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 182934 is a 16 foot long Otca model with a keel. It was built between March and May, 1969. The original exterior paint color design was similar to the one shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design46.gif which was know as the design number 46. It shipped on August 27th, 1973 to Wawarsing, New York.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 119696 is a 17 foot long, AA (or top) grade, Otca model with open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, a keel, and floor rack. It was built between November, 1936 and February, 1937. The original exterior paint color design was Yale blue. It shipped on March 6th, 1937 to New York City.

Scans showing these build records can be found below. These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to renew.

It is also possible that you could have other numbers or manufacturers if these descriptions don't match the canoes. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Thanks,

Benson
