Curious about Wooden Canoes
My Wife and a couple friends just purchased a 1950 Old Town 18 footer for me for my birthday. I know, awesome wife and friends!! I was wondering if I could info about the model, original color, etc...? I just purchased a membership to WCHA and can't wait to get to some national/local events. The serial number for my canoe is 152321 18. Thanks in advance for anyone's assistance.

Welcome to the WCHA, and yes, you have an awesome wife and friends! Someone will be along with the build information before long.

The big event coming up is our Annual Assembly, at Paul Smith's College, up in the Adirondacks. More info, including registration forms, is here: http://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?forums/annual-assembly.21/

It's a great event, and well worth the time & effort to get there! The organizers did another superb job of putting the program together.

Where are you located? You can find local chapter info here: http://www.wcha.org/local-area-chapters

More event info is here: http://www.wcha.org/upcoming-events

We'll hope to see you soon!!!

Thanks for the welcome. I saw that the Annual was a Paul Smith's. We love the Adirondacks and my Dad actually graduated from Paul Smith's back in the late 60's. Unfortunately, can't make it up there this year. We live in South Carolina and the closest local chapters I see are in Fl and Md. Maybe I'll have to start a SC chapter. Thanks again.

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 152321 is an 18 foot long, AA (or top) grade, guide model with white Maine cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, a keel, and a floor rack. It was built between June, 1947 and February, 1948. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on April 26th, 1948 to Conneaut Lake, Pennsylvania. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Craig Kitchen at ckitchenmqt@gmail.com can help you start a SC chapter. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks so much for the info. It's in pretty good condition right know, but I want to get her back to her original color when she needs repainted.
