1925 (?) Old Town Canoe

Colin Fegeley

Curious about Wooden Canoes
Was hoping for some additional information and a build sheet on an Old Town canoe that has been in my family for many years. (Serial #112686)

Side Note - @Benson Gray - Are you at the Antique Boat Show in Clayton, NY?

Thanks In Advance!

The Old Town canoe with serial number 112686 is a 16 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Yankee model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, a keel and a floor rack. It was built between June and July, 1933. The original exterior paint color was orange with a black stripe and turned down ends. This may have been similar to the one shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design39.gif which was known as the design number 39. It was shipped on July 31st, 1933 to Auburn, New York. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. I was at the Antique Boat Show in Clayton last weekend, which is why I'm so late in responding. Your nice old red sea model looked great in the water. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson
