The Old Town canoe with serial number 54187 is a 17 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Otca model with western red cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, twenty inch birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, a keel, a mast seat, a mast step in place, two number one spruce paddles with six inch blades that were six feet long, and two number one spruce paddles with seven inch blades that were six feet long. It was built between May and June, 1919. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on July 11th, 1919 to Cuba, New York. A scan of this build record can be found below.
This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. Thanks Benson. A high school student brought the boat to me to survey. He is restoring it for a high school project and would like me to mentor him on the process. It needs a lot of work so he will be learning pretty much all the steps in restoring one of these boats. It is good to see a new generation interested in saving these canoes.
